Shaders are very usefull technique to compute graphics and increase the performance regarding graphics operations.

There are two strong trends regarding shader's creations. You can use OpenGL and their with their Shader language GLSL:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GLSL or you can use DirectX with HLSL

Xaml uses HLSL in since it's based on DirectX and Microsoft Technologies. I'd recommend to use Shazzam in order to create your Shaders. It provides a good tutorial in order to get the basis of Shaders and the tool dynamically generates all the C# skeleton to consume the Cs for your application.
